Day 89

We were expecting company today, but they cancelled at the last minute. Alex ended up in daycare and Wally and I just took a day to ourselves to relax. We took another walk in the woods and decided to try and take a walk once a week on our kid-free alone days from now on. We'll try and find new spots to explore every time. Here are some nature pics from our trek today.

After we got home I used yesterday's apple sauce to make a spice cake with a buttermilk syrup topping.

Day 88

We got free bags of apples at the grocery store so I made apple sauce. This stuff makes the house smell so freaking yummy!

Wally fixed our broken dishwasher, but as he was doing so, he flooded the kitchen and now a few of the joints on my floor look like this... *cry*

Day 87

This morning I woke up and I couldn't open my eye. It was all gooped up and the lashes were glued together. When I finally got it open, it looked like this:

I threw on a baseball cap for the day and headed out to do some errands. Ryan actually wanted to come with me today, so I drove him over to a place he has been wanting to check out for awhile... the train station.

Even though we didn't see any trains, he thought it was great, and chose a rock that was along the tracks as a souvenir to bring home.

When we got back home, we all decided to take a walk in the woods. Our cat Newman was outside and he followed along.

And he followed...

And he followed. He actually did the whole 3 km trek with us.

At the end of the trail it started to get really muddy, and we all ended up with about an inch of mud on the bottom of our boots.

The dogs however loved the mud. I don't think I have ever seen Murphy so dirty before. At one point it looked like she was dragging half the forrest behind her in her fur.

Day 86

Ryan got his own pet guinea pig. He is completely responsible for him, he has to make sure he has food and water, he has to help clean his cage, and he has to play with him safely. So far, so good! The little guy is really cute too. He's all black, so he's been named Inkwell, or Inky for short. As you can see, the cats love him too...

Day 85

Ryan had the day off of school today so we went into town. For Easter, the mall had set up a bunch of areas with animals. We got to see goats, sheep, chickens, little baby ducks and baby pigs. Ryan loved feeding the sheep, Alex just threw the food at them.

Alex decided to be whiny and cry for 10 minutes straight at Dollarama and then passed out cold.

At my parent's house, he raided my mom's Barbie collection and ripped one out of the box. He has this obsession with Barbie, he loves her. This picture will be used when he's 14 for bribery purposes :P

At the end of the day, my dad couldn't handle the excitement anymore...

Day 84

This morning we turned on the dishwasher and it protested. Loudly. Looks like it's hand washing until wally can take a look at it on his day off. One thing I hate more than anything in the world is hand washing dishes. Blech! I hate putting my hands in that murky water full of food chunks. Not expecting a dishwasher breakdown, I didn't have any gloves around, so I had to put on my big girl panties and deal with it.

Day 83

So yesterday evening it started snowing and it didn't stop for hours. In the morning we woke up to a winter wonderland again. By the time Ryan got home, everything was back to green. This spring weather is whachkadoo!

Day 82

"Let me in!" Miss Meow getting pelted by giant snow flakes. Serves her right for escaping again.

Day 81

Last fall I somehow forgot to evacuate the goldfish from my pond before it iced over. The year before Wally had told me that sometimes goldfish will survive the winter frozen solid, so out of the dozen we had, we left 2 in to see if they would live. The next spring I found their bloated bodies floating on the surface. So this year, I felt really bad that I had forgot them in there. I went to the pond with Wally this morning and saw 6 blobs floating at the surface and said "Awww.. see, they all died again...OH MY GOD THEY'RE MOVING!" Believe it or not, these guys survived being frozen solid. My pond is only about 2 feet deep, so it definitely freezes right to the bottom. I can't believe they lived!

Day 80

Today the kids were bugging me for a snack, and I had a sweet tooth, so I made up cheater S'mores. I just stacked some mini marshmallows and chocolate chips on a graham cracker, then baked it a 350 oven for about 5 mins, stacked another cracker on top and tah-dah! Sticky goodness!

Sticky

Gooey

Kissy...awwww

Day 79

All the snow had finally melted in the backyard which means the boys were finally able to go cruising in their car again.

Maggie in the mean time dug herself another hole in the yard.

Dinner tonight was sweet chili bean casserole. So yummy! I had 3 bowls and might go back for a 4th later tonight.

Day 78

Today I gave Ryan's room a major cleaning and rearranged all his furniture. It took me 3.5 hours to do everything. When he got home from school he was quite surprised. I decided to take pictures because we all know that the wonderful cleanliness won't last. LOL

Day 77

For dinner, honey curry chicken with basmati rice and peas

and for dessert, ice cream cone cookies made with Ryan's Play-doh shape cutter

Day 76

For St-Patrick's Day today, Ryan came home with a shamrock name tag that he had made in school declaring him to be "McRyan". He made one for Wally and I too, naming us McMom and McDad. :)

Day 75

Today was really beautiful. In the early morning I had spotted 5 deer, some starlings, red winged black birds, and Canadian geese. Spring is definitely here. Wally and I were kid free today, so we decided to trek through the woods.

We came across this old dump site

Signs of life

Funky fungus

We were so hot and sweaty that Wally ended up like this:

After the kids got home, we all went into the back yard to play. Maggie ended up digging herself a big hole to sleep in. Ug. She ended up completely filthy.

Ryan asked if he could help wash the dogs and we agreed. We don't know who got more of a washing though... you be the judge:
